I can’t think of a better way to open a progressive, queer Blues record than this tune!
I don’t know anyone who’s talked about queer sex and relationships among men so openly in Blues. I wrote this tune for my boyfriend at the time, I was so deeply, madly in love with him and this song is a celebration of that, and all the wonderfulness that is queer sex.
It’s just this big, loud, proud announcement of “Yes, I’m queer, and I love men! Deal with it!” and a fantastic way to start the record.
The music matches the lyrics: it’s an upbeat shuffle, with raunchy double slide guitar and harmonica on top of a smoking band! My friend Liam Ward, an award winning harmonica player from the UK, plays harmonica on this record. The back and forth, cat and mouse chase between the double slide guitar and the harmonica in the solos was recorded live in the studio. I knew I had to fly Liam over from the UK where he lives, and the results were worth it!
