about

For this tune, I was definitely thinking in more of a pop country kind of vibe- it’s definitely got that kind of twangy, bar room country pop rock kind of feel to me.

The backing vocals in the chorus, which I think are really catchy, were originally not there to begin with. My Producer Chris Birkett, had Christian Ruiz, a local Toronto producer, interning for him while we were recording. Chris had come up with the whole backing vocal part and arranged all the harmonies, but neither Chris nor myself could sing the part.

Chris turned to me and said, “Christian could probably do the backing vocals.”

I turned to Christian and said, “Get over here.”

And so Christian got on the mic, and the rest is history.

Lyrically, this song is about a guy caught in a war zone, blinded by the drop of bombs, desperately trying to get back to his lover. Dark stuff, but I think the darkness of the lyrics is contrasted wonderfully by the brightness and happiness of the music- it’s that clash and tension that I think makes it so great.

lyrics

Lyrics:

And if the sky were to crumble and fall
Well I'd find some way to make it back to you
And if the earth were to swallow us all
Well I'd die knowing that my heart was true

You don't know how I feel
I'm trying to survive
Trying to think and feel

You don't know how I feel
I'm trying to survive and keep myself alive
Trying to stick with what's real

Let me tell you 'bout the heartache
Let me tell you 'bout the pain
Caught in a war, I don't know what for
Yeah I'm caught in some crazy game

I remember when the bombs dropped
And the light flashed before my eyes
Couldn't see the sun for days
And still can't and there's no use asking why

You don't know how I feel
I'm trying to survive
Trying to think and feel

You don't know how I feel
I'm rying to survive and keep myself alive
Trying to stick with what's real

You don't know how I feel
I'm trying to survive
Trying to think and feel

You don't know how I feel
I'm trying to survive and keep myself alive
Trying to stick with what's real

And if the sky were to crumble and fall
I'd find some way to make it back to you

Yeah!
