about

The music on this track is inspired by the music of the great Latin percussionist and band leader Tito Puente. Most people are familiar with Carlos Santana’s version of Tito’s hit, “Oye Como Va”, which was one of the first rock tunes I ever heard as a teenager. The original version by Tito and his band is, I feel, the definitive version, and it was the main source of inspiration for this tune.

My drummer Jeremy Ronson taught me a lot about the different kinds of Latin rhythms, especially the different kinds of claves. Both Jeremy and my producer Chris Birkett did an amazing job on the percussion on this track, with Jeremy playing a wonderful drum solo on this song! It’s his time to shine, finally!

My friend Rex Ruber plays some wonderful alto saxophone on this track. The slide guitar and the sax almost sound like one instrument, and I’m really pleased with how it came out. Rex played a great, middle eastern style sax solo on this tune and Robb Cappelletto, who is one of the best jazz fusion guitarists in Toronto, played what I think is one of the standout solos on the record! All said and done, Conquistador is a track that lets each musician shine and bring their individual influences in a wonderful tribute to Tito Puente’s music, and Latin music as a whole.

Lyrics:

Lyrics?!
You want lyrics?!!
This is an instrumental!

What has the world come to?
People asking for lyrics on an instrumental!

Back in my day, we had common sense!

Lyrics in an instrumental!.

I've never been so insult-

(Hello, this is the Intergalactic, Inter-Space-Time Musical Convergence Authority. We are pleased to inform you that the Artist has been duly reprimanded for his tirade and has been given a very stern warning and finger wagging and told not to do it again, OR ELSE. Please, enjoy the track, free of tirades from Artists with Gigantic Egos, and enjoy your day.)

Right, thank you Officer Hans.

(You're welcome, Mike.)

What I meant to say is, there are no lyrics, because this is an instrumental. Please, enjoy!
